 SPE Canada and the Canadian Heavy Oil Association (CHOA) will host this 1-day conference on Monday April 19, 2010 at Red & White Club, McMahon Stadium, Calgary, Alberta. This conference focuses on the technology related to recovery of heavy oil and bitumen. Our theme this year is Cleaner, Leaner, Meaner. 21st Annual SPE Calgary Section Golf Tournament
Planning is now underway for the 21st Annual SPE Calgary Section golf tournament. As always, the tournament will provide an opportunity to gather with your colleagues for a great day of golf and some valuable networking. It also results in an important contribution to the SPE Calgary Scholarship fund each year, helping to support the SPE Calgary section in providing $50,000 in scholarships annually to post-secondary students enrolled in a petroleum related discipline.
The tournament will be held at Priddis on Thursday, June 10, 2010. With the merger this past year of the Petroleum Society and SPE, we expect to find ourselves filled to capacity (256 golfers) once again.
The tournament would not be possible without the support of our many sponsors. Attached, you will find the sponsorship and team registration documents. Please take a minute to review them and then let us know if you plan to participate this year. Forms and payment can be returned to Bill Clay, but please send an e-mail to confirm if you would like a spot reserved.

SPE Calgary - Scholarship Announcement
It’s that time of year again and most college/university students are back in the full swing of things, it is also that time of year for the SPE Calgary Section to announce the 2009-2010 Scholarship Program.
As a charitable organization committed to disseminating technical knowledge within the Petroleum community, the SPE Calgary Section understands that the future of our Section and Society, as a whole hinges on our younger members.
Through our annual Scholarship Program we:
- Encourage our younger members to strive for academic excellence and seek educational advancement in the Petroleum industry.
- Promote and grow our Society
- Provide financial assistance to assist in the ever increasing tuition/education cost environment, and
- Reward students who demonstrate an exceptional sense of commitment to our Society and our community

Petroleum Society of Canada Has Merged With Society of Petroleum Engineers
On 7 August 2009, the Petroleum Society of Canada merged with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). The Petroleum Society office in Calgary has become the SPE Canada office, continuing support of services to Canadian members and publication of the Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology. SPE Educational Tools available from the Calgary Section
Energy4me, SPE's energy education outreach program, now offers new tools for SPE members to give classroom presentations, updating the Magic Suitcase program. We have recently received an Energy4me Kit and 'Oil and Natural Gas' book that members can use when giving classroom presentations to primary, intermediate, and secondary schools. We also still have the Magic Suitcase for loan as well. It can be borrowed from Janice Kyte at the SPE office.
