Chairman’s New Year Message
May I wish you all the best for the coming year and remind you, if you haven’t already done so, to renew your membership as soon as you can. This will ensure that you will continue receiving your SPE publications and enable you to take advantage of all the facilities the society has to offer.
First, I’d like to remind you that the Calgary section has funding for several scholarships. The deadline of February 14th for scholarship applications is fast approaching. See
http://www.speca.ca/Scholarships.asp for details and
http://www.speca.ca/pdf/Section_Scholarship_Application.pdf for the application form.
Then there are our regional awards. There are a number of categories:
• Regional Service
• Outstanding Service by a Young Professional
• Regional Distinguished Achievement for Petroleum Engineering Faculty
• Distinguished Corporate Support
• Regional Technical
We rely on members to identify worthy recipients – indeed you could be one of them, but only if your colleagues take the trouble to let us know.
The deadline for these nominations is February 15th. And it’s not a lot of work – the proposal forms are now much simplified. Forms can be downloaded at http://www.spe.org/awards/docs/nominateReg.pdf.
There are also awards to recognize companies in the region that help make contributions to the Society or the petroleum industry in the support of SPE membership, programs and events. , Support is not solely through financial assistance, but also through excellence in leadership and the commitment of time, energy and professional resources. The nomination form is at http://www.spe.org/awards/docs/nominatecorp.pdf.
So please take a little time to identify colleagues worthy of recognition.
In other areas I am pleased to note that we are set for an exciting session of conferences and symposia in Calgary – our first Heavy Oil Conference 12-14 June since we amalgamated with PetSoc,
http://www.spe.org/events/ihoc/2012/ which has already attracted an impressive number of abstracts; we are working on an economics and evaluation symposium in September – also for the first time in Calgary, and we are continuing with our SPE Canadian Unconventional Resources Conference 30 Oct - 1 Nov.
And of course we continue offering a range of technical luncheons every month. So plenty of reasons to participate in SPE activities.
Regards,
Roger Hough
